Malaysia's Head Coach Optimistic Ahead of Rematch with Vietnam National Team

Amid numerous controversies surrounding the Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Vietnam on March 31, as well as the suspension of naturalized players, Malaysia's head coach Peter Cklamovski emphasized that he is focusing on a long-term plan beyond the immediate issues.

The Australian strategist affirmed that his goal is not only about current results but also about sustainable development for Malaysian football.

"There is a bigger picture here. I have to compete in the present, but at the same time, I must do what’s right for the country and plan for the future.

Some young players will be given opportunities to challenge the starting positions, while experienced players will be pushed to raise their standards. That’s how we grow together."

Cklamovski believes leadership spirit must come from the entire team: "Everyone is a captain, everyone is a leader. Not just one person… but from all members. This mindset drives the team, creates competition, and inspires the next generation."

His vision extends to the entire national football ecosystem.

"Better pitches, improved training facilities, and stadiums don’t only benefit the national team. They elevate the league, enhance fan experience, attract sponsors, and develop football. Better conditions lead to better quality products, and everyone benefits."

Despite seven naturalized players — Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal, and Hector Hevel — awaiting appeal decisions from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) following FIFA’s one-year ban for document forgery, Cklamovski remains optimistic.

"I live in a land of hope. If the players return, they will rejoin the squad and contribute to our 2026 goals. Our mindset is to qualify for the Asian Cup and win it, and that’s our daily motivation."

The Australian coach explained he uses a structured selection process and clear methodology: "I monitor performance, gather data, and foster competition within the squad. Players understand they must fight for their place, which drives their performance.

It’s about winning together, developing together, and preparing for the future together. My goal is that when I leave, Malaysian football will be in a better position than when I arrived."

CAS has held separate hearings for the FAM legal team starting from February 23.

It is known that no senior official from the Malaysian Football Association (FAM), including Secretary General Datuk Noor Azman Rahman, was present in Switzerland; instead, the legal team was fully entrusted to handle the case.

Once the hearing concludes, CAS will issue a final ruling, expected at 4:00 AM on February 27 (Vietnam time).
