Man City cannot afford to ignore the warning

Man City started the Enzo Maresca era with a 0-3 loss to Arsenal in the 2026 English Super Cup. While one game is not a precise measure for the whole campaign, how Man City fell at Cardiff has laid bare many problems worth attention.

More notably, Maresca himself once called the English Super Cup a truly meaningful trophy. Therefore, the fact that Man City showed very little competitiveness for most of the match makes this defeat even more thought-provoking.

Midfield overwhelmed, lack of creativity in play

The most obvious issue for Man City lies in the midfield area. Arsenal not only controlled possession but also made the duo of Elliot Anderson and Mateo Kovacic face great difficulties in duels. Man City had a lot of ball possession, but lacked passes capable of breaking the opponent's defensive structure. Man City did not even register a shot on target until the 74th minute.

This is a stark contrast to the image of Man City under Guardiola. For nearly a decade, this team not only controlled possession but also had the ability to turn that control into constant pressure. Players like Bernardo Silva, Rodri, or Ilkay Gundogan once had the ability to read situations and find solutions on their own when the initial system failed. Currently, Man City lacks players who provide similar flexibility.

Maresca is still trying to maintain many of Guardiola's familiar principles, but with a faster pace and a more direct approach. During the preseason friendlies in Asia, Man City showed positive signs with quick passes between the lines and the dribbling ability of wingers. But against Arsenal, that system became slow and predictable.

Maresca used a 3-2 structure when Man City built from the back. The issue is that these predetermined patterns can become weaknesses if the opponent finds ways to block passing options. Guardiola once had players capable of transforming the system during a match, but now they are absent.

This shortage is even more notable because Man City's midfield has undergone major changes. Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders are confirmed to leave, while Bernardo Silva has also departed the club. That is why Man City is reportedly in need of further midfield reinforcement. Maresca wants Enzo Fernandez, but the Argentine midfielder is not seen as a direct replacement for Rodri.

The warning cannot be taken lightly

The defeat to Arsenal certainly puts Maresca under great pressure, because he is not just succeeding an ordinary coach. Guardiola left an exceptionally high standard after nearly a decade in charge of Man City. Therefore, any coach taking over the team must face a very difficult challenge: Building a new identity while maintaining the competitive capability that has become the standard at the Etihad.

One rare positive sign is Jack Grealish. After 15 months without playing for Man City, the player once considered surplus to requirements was brought on in the second half and even became one of the team's best performers. Elliot Anderson also showed some positive signs, especially in his ability to look for early passes behind the opponent's defense. That could open up a new option to exploit Haaland's pace.

However, Man City needs more than individual bright spots. They need to complete the squad, especially in midfield; find a way to prevent the 3-2 buildup system from becoming rigid; improve their ability to contest when opponents bypass the first pressing line. If the English Super Cup is seen as an initial test, Maresca's Man City failed to pass it.
