The 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinals from the perspective of the domestic league

People often say that the national team is both a mirror and a measure of the health of the domestic league. The domestic league provides the personnel foundation, professional quality, and competitive rhythm, while the national team truly reflects that core quality when participating in international competitions.

According to this criterion, the Vietnamese and Thai domestic leagues are doing their job very well, as both the Vietnam and Thailand national teams have won by a two-goal margin away from home in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinals and are now full of opportunities to advance to the final.

According to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the world rankings from the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), the V-League is ranked 3rd in Southeast Asia (14th overall), behind Thai League 1 (8th) and Malaysia Super League (12th), while the remaining semifinalist at the 2026 ASEAN Cup, Singapore, is only ranked 5th (31st), even behind Indonesia (28th), who were eliminated in the group stage.

This ranking result is relatively accurate, as the top three domestic leagues in Southeast Asia also have representatives participating in the 2026/27 AFC Champions League Elite, the highest level club competition in Asian football. Among them, Thai League 1 stands out with three representatives: Buriram United, Ratchaburi, and Port FC, while the V-League and Malaysia Super League each have only one representative (CAHN and JDT, respectively).

However, a closer look at this list reveals clear differences that directly affect the quality of the national teams at the 2026 ASEAN Cup. This is because in the Malaysia Super League, JDT has been virtually dominant with 12 consecutive championships from 2014 to the present. In Thai League 1, although Buriram United is the top force with 5 consecutive titles since the 2021/22 season, they have "only" won 7 times in the last 10 years. Similarly, in the V-League, the championship has been rotated among different clubs, and so far no team has established an overwhelming advantage like JDT has in the Malaysia Super League.

The result of this diversity is that the Vietnam national team is doing very well in balancing the use of external resources (naturalized players, overseas Vietnamese) and maintaining and developing internal strength. The presence of players like Xuân Son, Patrik Lê Giang, and Đình Bắc in the Vietnam national team clearly reflects this balance, as the resources complement each other and there is no unipolar phenomenon.

Meanwhile, although Buriram United is undeniably the top team in Thai League 1, there are still some formidable names just behind them, such as Ratchaburi, Port FC, Bangkok United, and BG Pathum United. Therefore, Thai football also has sufficient resources to supply the national team. In fact, Thailand has so far only used foreign-born players and has not yet used naturalized foreign players.

A typical example is that Thailand could field up to 7 U23 players in the starting lineup for the match against Singapore in the first leg of the 2026 ASEAN Cup semifinals and still won 3-1 away from home.

This is completely different from Malaysia, where JDT's excessive dominance in the Malaysia Super League has seriously affected the "health" of the domestic league, causing Malaysia to suffer from a severe shortage of domestic football talent. Perhaps that is the reason why they had to "take a risk" with the illegal naturalization of a series of South American players last year, leading to heavy sanctions from FIFA and AFC.

From the stories of the V-League, Thai League 1, and Malaysia Super League, we can see how fully and clearly the quality and internal situation of a domestic league can be reflected in the international competition results of the corresponding national team.
