Patrik Lê Giang is savoring a sweet dream

Following roughly three years of waiting to qualify for the Vietnam national team, Patrik Lê Giang is reliving memorable moments in his career. The 1992-born goalkeeper has not only claimed the starting position under coach Kim Sang Sik but has also continuously made an impact, particularly in the 2-0 win against Malaysia in the semifinal first leg.

Notably, Lê Giang missed the opportunity to join the national team in March 2026 not due to professional issues but because his federation transfer procedures had not yet been completed according to FIFA regulations. Once those obstacles were resolved, coach Kim Sang Sik immediately gave this goalkeeper a chance.

This was also a well-deserved reward for a player whom the Korean strategist had been monitoring and expecting for a long time. Coach Kim Sang Sik values Lê Giang not only for his professional skills but also for his competitive spirit, physical fitness, communication ability, and command of the defensive line.

The Vietnam national team did not control the game better than their opponents; they even had less possession and had to withstand pressure at many moments. In that situation, Lê Giang became the last line of defense covering for the backline.

Early in the match, Lê Giang and Việt Anh combined to deny Gunalan a good chance. More importantly, after escaping the red card, Lê Giang remained solid. In the final minutes, Malaysia continuously applied pressure, but the overseas Vietnamese goalkeeper stayed calm, including a crucial save in stoppage time, contributing to keeping a clean sheet.

It was no coincidence that Lê Giang received one of the highest ratings from statistics sites. If Xuân Son decided the match with a goal in the 45+5th minute, then Lê Giang preserved that result with his saves. One created the advantage, the other maintained it. The 2-0 victory in Kuala Lumpur, therefore, was not just a story of the attack.

Interestingly, Lê Giang does not see himself as a hero. The 1992-born goalkeeper only said that the team is only halfway through the journey and needs to stay focused for the second leg at Mỹ Đình. That calmness also reflects the playing style of this goalkeeper.
