Until the end of yesterday afternoon (August 16), the FIFA homepage still lacked any updates on the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, with the latest published document concerning the tournament being the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 regulations, uploaded on July 19, 2026.

All details such as the prize structure or prize money for participating teams have mostly come from regional media, especially Indonesia, the host nation, while neither the FIFA website nor the Southeast Asian football federations have provided any official confirmation on this issue.

According to our findings, there are several reasons why some Southeast Asian countries are not particularly keen on the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. The first reason is that the tournament overlaps with the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, which holds immense significance for nations like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore.

This is an arena where athletes from these countries regularly win gold medals in specific events, and they consider the Asian Games both a test and a preparation for the Olympics.

The second reason is that the guest lineup for the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 lacks real competitiveness, missing attractive names from East Asia or West Asia, and instead featuring some South Asian teams whose level is even lower than that of Southeast Asia.

Therefore, the organizing committee of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 is reportedly under immense pressure as sponsorship sales have not been secured, and television rights are said to have been sold to only two countries so far, one of which is host Indonesia.

Indonesia is also the most enthusiastic team about the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, because after their humiliating failure in the ASEAN Cup 2026, where they were eliminated right after the group stage, the Indonesian team desperately needs a spectacular show of force in the ASEAN Cup 2026 to display their strength with the full assembly of Dutch-born overseas stars playing in Europe.

However, Indonesia might be an exceptional case, as the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 actually has few advantages over the ongoing ASEAN Cup 2026, and it is even possible that both fans and players in the region will feel saturated due to two similar tournaments starting consecutively within just over two months.

The guest quality is nothing special, coupled with the fact that teams like China and India have continuously withdrawn from participation. Although the prize structure seems very attractive, it has not been officially confirmed. The television rights and the list of sponsors are still up in the air. It is no surprise that the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 has not yet created a buzz among fans in the region.
