Summer 2026 Transfers: Is Enzo Fernandez Really Worth Twice as Much as Rodri?

Chelsea has set a price of £120 million for Enzo Fernandez, whereas Barcelona is trying to acquire Rodri from Man City for just half that amount. What accounts for this discrepancy, and what elements make up a player's transfer valuation?

Rumors are swirling around two of the Premier League's top midfielders. Barcelona is pushing to sign Rodri, while Manchester City is linked with a potential move for Enzo Fernandez to the Etihad. But why is the Chelsea player valued so much higher?

Rodri is a four-time Premier League champion and was named the best player of the tournament at the World Cup with Spain. Yet Barcelona hopes to sign him for around £60 million, while Chelsea is demanding double that for Fernandez.

Youth Trumps Experience

Rodri's outstanding performances at the World Cup with Spain, after two injury-hit seasons at Manchester City, show that the former Ballon d'Or winner can still compete at the highest level.

Even in a Premier League season disrupted by injury, data from Gradient Sports shows that Rodri still outperformed Fernandez in 5 out of 6 key midfield metrics, including passing, dribbling, and tackling.

However, Rodri's age is a crucial factor. He turned 30 at the start of the summer and is at a different stage of his career compared to Fernandez, who is 25 and about to enter what are expected to be his peak years.

Looking at Premier League midfielders who have had a transfer value of £35 million or more on Transfermarkt, the data chart shows their average value peaks at age 27, before starting to decline steadily as players approach 30.

Rodri is a rather special case. According to Transfermarkt, his value peaked later, at age 28, when he won the Ballon d'Or. But after that, it dropped sharply, from £111.1 million to £47 million.

Meanwhile, Fernandez's value on Transfermarkt is at an all-time high, rising to £85.5 million, seemingly following the aforementioned trend.

Longer Contract, Higher Value?

Contract length is another important factor in valuing players, not only for Rodri and Fernandez but across the entire market.

Rodri is entering the final year of his contract, meaning Manchester City risks losing him on a free transfer next summer. In contrast, Fernandez has six years left on his Chelsea deal, giving the London club a much stronger negotiating position.

When grouping current Premier League players by contract length, the data shows clearly: the longer the contract, the higher the average value.

According to Transfermarkt valuations, players with five or more years left on their contracts, like Fernandez, have an average value of £49.7 million. Meanwhile, players with less than a year left, like Rodri, have an average value of just £7 million.

It should also be noted that Transfermarkt accounts for contract length only to a certain extent. Therefore, the actual impact of contract duration on transfer value may be even greater than the data suggests.

Which Factors Are Most Important?

By cross-referencing the profiles of Premier League players with their transfer values on Transfermarkt, the analysis shows that age and remaining contract length are the two biggest factors determining a player's value.

Other factors, according to the analysis, include short- and long-term form, club strength — quantified through Opta's power rankings — and recent availability, measured by minutes played.

Thus, although Rodri has better performance both short and long term, Fernandez holds the advantage in factors that have a greater impact on transfer value, such as age and contract length.

Fernandez also has a much better availability record. Rodri was significantly affected by playing only 1,515 out of a possible 3,420 minutes in the Premier League last season, while Fernandez played 3,121 minutes.

Fernandez's relatively less severe injury history is also a factor that helps explain why his transfer value is much higher than Rodri's, even though the Manchester City midfielder is the better performer.

Market Context Also Plays a Key Role

Transfer valuation is not an exact science. Theoretical value and actual transfer fees can differ significantly depending on specific circumstances.

For example, last summer's transfer window saw forwards bought at elevated fees due to demand exceeding supply.

The asking price for players in each position is often benchmarked against recent deals. This summer, Chelsea may consider the fees that Tottenham, Manchester City, and Arsenal paid for central midfielders like Mateus Fernandes (£85m), Sandro Tonali (£100m), Elliot Anderson (£116m), and Bruno Guimaraes (£75m) when valuing Fernandez.

This context helps explain why Chelsea can set a price as high as £120 million for the Argentine international, even though Transfermarkt values him at a significantly lower £85.5 million.

This "snowball effect" helps transfer fees rise much faster than inflation. As of a month ago, the average cost of a top-level signing increased from £53.9 million to £68.2 million in just one year.

Premier League clubs are also increasingly willing to pay higher fees for players who are already Premier League-ready, due to the league's ever-increasing physical demands.

This may partly explain why Chelsea believes Fernandez is now worth more than the £107 million they paid to sign him from Benfica three years ago.
